This beautiful coin was minted by the Symbol Arts Co. and is called a challenge coin.

The pictures do not do it justice, it is 1 1/2 inches in diameter and 1/8 inches thick and gold plated.

Challenge Coins surfaced during World War II. The practice of carrying a coin designed specifically for a unit was popular with the Army Special Forces Carrying the coin at all times and presenting it when "challenged" to prove affiliation with that unit resulted in a number of consequences for those who could not produce a coin, the most popular required the coinless soldier to buy a round of drinks. That practice continues today especially at the up coming reunion, it will pay for its self in a short time.
